Psychoanalysis: elaborate theory of the structure of the mind and the role of the unconscious processes in determining behavior. Defense mechanisms: ego fights to stay on top of the id and superego. Rationalization- excuses for doing what you know is wrong. Displacement (take out frustration on a safe target rather indulging in the source): yelling at family when having a bad day at work. Regression (go backwards: like moving back home when you"re frusturated) Reaction formation: doing opposite of what someone tells you so that to appear in control. Denial- pretend problem doesn"t exist at all. Techniques designed to reveal nature of unconscious mind and conflicts through catharsis and insight. Free association: respond with first thing that comes to mind. Dream analysis: therapist uncovering repressed and sensitive conflicts; tell your dream to freud and he will interpret. Transference: patient come to relate to the therapist much like a mother/father figure.
