Division of labour: industrialization leaves the workers alienated, pining for a revolution. Today: the revolution has not happened: we are in a post-industrial context where the industrialization process has shifted course and the alienation has taken a new form. Emotions are a clue or warning to what is happening to us and others. But friends, family and bosses try to choose our emotions by telling us how we should feel. So we learn to control our emotions and hide them from others. Mental: writing law briefs, both genders. Emotion: making customers happy, customer is always right, women, the most alienating type of emotion management. 1/3 of all workers have jobs involving emotional labour: of men, of women. Lengthy training period: isolated, not allowed to go home, like brainwashing, intent is to induce deep acting.
