Defensive/repressive coping: psychological reactions to stress that seek to minimize the negative effects of stress by distancing ourselves from the stress triggers. Denial of reality refusing the accept reality. Overcompensation releasing stress in one situation by overgratifying in another. Learned helplessness passive behaviour produced by continued exposure to unavoidable or aversive events (e. g. : exam study, depression) Neurogenesis our brains continue to produce new brain cells, especially in areas of the brain responsible for memory; stress significantly slow down the number of new cells. Prefrontal cortex stress reduces the activity of the planning and decision- making areas of the brain. Flashbulb memories incredibly vivid and specific memories tied to specific, intense, often negative events that we experience. Self-control the ability to regulate behaviour and focus on positive goals and avoid negative ones. Burnout - long term exhaustion and loss of motivation caused by chronic stress at work or school.
