Short-term controllable stress is something we prize because it makes us do better on tasks. Long-term stress that is not properly dealt with has psychological consequences: cortisol and catecholamines can go through the blood brain barrier (bbb) which can maladaptively change the structure of our brains. In short-term, stress causes our attention and memory to singularly focus on the task at hand: flashbulb memories: vivid and specific memories tied to specific, intense, often negative events that we experience. Long-term can cause serious attentional and memory impairments. These results suggest that poverty can impair cognitive function. Self-control: the ability to regulate behaviour and focus on positive goals and avoid negative ones.
