Document Summary
Short-term controllable stress is something we prize because it makes us do better on tasks. Long-term stress that is not properly dealt with has psychological consequences: cortisol and catecholamines can go through the blood brain barrier (bbb) which can maladaptively change the structure of our brains. Long-term leads to a perpetual cycle of stress and coping. In short-term, stress causes our attention and memory to singularly focus on the task at hand: flashbulb memories: vivid and specific memories tied to specific, intense, often negative events that we experience. Long-term can cause serious attentional and memory impairments. Feb 2, 18: with chronic stress, your become impaired at shifting attention from one thing to another (multitasking) New cells do not develop in the memory areas of your brain, leading to increased problems with remembering new info. These results suggest that poverty can impair cognitive function. Self-control: the ability to regulate behaviour and focus on positive goals and avoid negative ones.
