Contrasting views: conservative sociologists are also called marriage promoters , divorce is see as an indicator of social pathology. Immigrating to canada gives many women this choice: divorce is not as common among immigrants. Immigrant women who seek divorce are at a higher risk of violence. Legal changes: divorce laws in canada and western countries have changed. Causes of divorce: predictors or determinants of divorce, are complicated and factors are interrelated, three levels of causal explanation, micro-level, macro-level, meso-level. Micro-sociological causes: changes at the level of the individual, grounds used when filing for divorce, are not very useful for sociological understanding, dynamics of the marriage relationship, poor communication, poor conflict resolution skills, perceived inequity between spouses. Meso-sociological causes: demographic predictors, characteristics of those at high risk of divorce, age at marriage, cohabitation, second marriages, parental divorce, childbearing, before and after marriage, stage of marriage, place of residence, religion, socio-economic status.
