Document Summary
Determinism = the extent to which our attitudes, behaviour, and personality are determined (caused) by a specific factor nature vs. nurture debate: free will & agency = the ability to exercise personal choice. Members of popular culture have agency and are co-creating culture: hard vs. soft determinism* Hard you are programmed to think or act in a certain way because of biology or culture, are being acted upon, everything you say/do is because of someone else"s influence. Soft - we have some choice but implication is that you are now held accountable for your behaviour: biological determinism personal characteristics are genetically determined; genes determine who we are going to be as a person. Soft determinists disagree say we have predisposition cultivated if given the right tools/environment: social/cultural determinism all behaviour can be taught and learned; social environment = cause/creation. Law of effect current behaviour is a consequence of reinforcing past behaviour.
