SDS150R Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Gestational Age, Isotretinoin, Aspirin
Document Summary
When does development begin: conception, number of influences that happen at conception, genetics inherited from parents, what impacts the other stages have on birth. Implantation/zygote stage: embryonic stage, fetal stage, at birth. Prenatal development: mother"s experience, fetus" experience, germinal stage (conception - 2 weeks, embryonic stage (implantation - 8 weeks, fetal stage (2 months - birth) Congenital - present at birth but not due to genetic lineage. Teratogens: any environmental agent that interferes with and causes damage to prenatal development, happens when chemicals pass through the placental wall, influencing the development of the fetus, can have delayed impact, some are very subtle (learning disabilities) Critical period of prenatal development: most rapid development, first 8 weeks of pregnancy, time where the most rapid development occurs, most vulnerable to harm. Intimate partner violence: physical contact, sperm damage, workplace toxins, chromosomal damage, alcohol and drug use can pass through in chromosomes.
