Wanted to know the way a group is run and how it affects performance. Looked at different leadership styles with groups of boys playing: authoritarian, democratic, laissez faire. Discussion of the classic study of leadership style. Participatory management expansion of lewin"s original ideas: get a lot more out of workers, a lot more original and creative, sustained productivity if they feel they have a say. Did study in 1936 when it looked like autocratic leaders were going to take over the world (e. g. , hitler) Advantage to board of directors: than individuals. The group polarization phenomenon results in groups becoming more extreme. A lot of research shows that too much commitment to the group can cause problems. Risky shift the group is more risky than the individual. Discussion of this in a group can result in people choosing a more risky option . Study: meyers and bishop (1970) quitting when you only have only 20% success.
