Life = evidence of metabolism: life-functional approach, an organism is dying when it can no longer maintain its form. Death = (cid:862)i(cid:396)(cid:396)e(cid:448)e(cid:396)si(cid:271)le, pe(cid:396)(cid:373)a(cid:374)e(cid:374)t (cid:272)essatio(cid:374) of life(cid:863: the more complex the organism, the slower this process is, organs/tissues can still be viable after the organism dies. Then death is the end of human consciousness. Is the person gone: putrefaction (significant decay) Identifiable to perceiver: event: clinical/legal, process: systematic putrefaction. Nonliving: no longer identifiable, preserving body was psychologically meaningful in some traditions (ie: mummification) In other traditions, body is irrelevant, destroyed after death.
