Psych 218: notes from readings (medical and legal level) The dying human: a perspective from palliative medicine. Death undergone, death experienced and what is written about death. Doctors might be a reasonable resource to be expected to know about death because they treat the body and illnesses but medical attention about death is limited. Focus less on dying and geared towards preventing death. Teaching and research in the field of death were very limited and this affected the patients and families. Due to prolonged ageing, there have been more rapid illnesses which are chronic and degenerative which results in more prolonged periods of illness and suffering before death. Lynn: most people will have a period of 2 years of deterioration in health before death, 3 trajectories of death- cancer, organ failure, frailty (slow decline in old age, palliative care is still challenged with non-malignant diseases. In medicine it"s usually at the time of diagnosis terminal.
