Cognitive therapy: recognizing and changing negative thoughts and maladaptive beliefs. Group therapy: simultaneous treatment of multiple clients. Trying to change the thought process in cognitive therapy. Group therapy came after wwii after there were many people in need. Freud practiced psychoanalysis for 50 years in vienna; still influential today in modified form. Treated patients with neuroses (anxiety & somatoform disorders). Symptoms caused by unresolved conflicts from childhood buried in the unconscious. Goal is to reorganize personality (3 to 5 years).
