LS227 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: White-Collar Crime, Anomie, Serial Killer
Document Summary
Durkheim"s relationship between crime and social structure. How white collar crime impacts the social structure and moral. Social groups working together to achieve common goals is an essential characteristic of human societies. A breakdown of society leads to increases in suicide and crime. Anomie - an absence of clear societal norms and values. Change in labour divisions and promotion of individualism changed societal norms. Social structure - the patterned and relatively stable arrangement of roles and statuses found within societies and social institutions. Pursuit of individual goals without legitimate means = normless (anomic) society. Therefore, people resort to crime to achieve their goals. Culturally prescribed aspirations - goals are de ned by culture, created by society and are universal in a society. This makes strain theory a consensus theory. The gap between goals and legitimate means is large for some and narrow for others.
