Two theoretical perspectives have guided the sociological scholarship on the relationship between crime and social structure. Examines crime based on the general broad agreement from society. Mean girls - consensus by a lot of people that regina. Generally ruling class, creating laws that reinforce their dominant position in society. Hunger games - law imposed on people who are not in power, laws reinforce capital"s position in society. Strain theory fits the general orientation of the consensus perspective. Social institutions all contribute to the smooth running of society. Crime occurs when something unusual happens that affects these institutions. This results in strains, stresses, and frustrations that affect behaviour. Wrote that social solidarity is essential in society. Shared goals, a set of shared norms; we all want the same things. The absence of clear social values and norms. What explains crime in advanced and socially heterogeneous, mixed societies.
