Deaths from natural disasters are not random: 90% of the death occur in poor countries, exacerbate deprivation in disadvantaged communities. The natural disaster puts the health system into crisis. Humanitarian emergency: a crisis characterized by large population displacement, food shortages, and social disruption: disrupts peoples lives in a large way. Have greatest impact on death toll: hurricanes, floods, tsunamis. Flooding is most devastating for the poor. Most devastating natural disasters in us history. Poorest people live in the lowest area, live in poorly build homes, don"t have home insurance, don"t have cars to flee etc: most affected by flooding. Hit a population dense area 2. 1 million people displaced. Poor social conditions before the earthquake: high poverty, low literacy, child malnutrition etc, corrupt political circumstances. Poor infrastructure with minimal building codes: severe infrastructure damage led to many more deaths. This earthquake had an extremely high mortality rate in comparison to the earthquake in china.
