Anatomy is the study of structure of a living organism & its component parts. Types: gross anatomy (regional -> specific and very detailed for every part of body & systematic (what we"re studying) big scale, microscopic anatomy (histology, other branches: developmental/embryology, pathological, radiographic. Intro to gross anatomy: anatomical position -> hand palm faces out, everything faces forward. Axial region: head, neck, trunk -> body suit area. 1. 3) as we go through course, familiarity will increase. Frontal: coronal plane -> divides into anterior and posterior. Transverse: horizontal plane -> divides body into superior and inferior (vertical) Sagittal planes: (left and right -> divided by midsagittal plane) (fig 1. 4-1. 5) Dorsal body cavity: cranial cavity lies in skull and encases brain (fig. 1. 6: vertebral cavity runs down the vertebral column and encloses the spinal cord. Q: in the anatomical position, the palms face anteriorly with thumbs pointing away from the body.
