Document Summary

However, a zero value does not mean nothing: interval observations that are also ranked or ordered. Length of a rope, (0 m means no rope): kelvin scale of temperature (0 k means the molecule has zero energy), mass of a piece of rock (0 kg means there is no rock). Observational study data is collected straight off from a random sample. We do not influence the values of the variables in the study. In other words, the variables are not controlled. Each student in a random sample of 50 students has his/her height and weight taken. Designed experiment we apply a treatment to objects in the study. This experiment may compare a treated group to a control group or between groups with different treatments. Example: when studying the efficacy of a drug, we divide our subjects into two or more groups with each group receiving a different amount of the drug.
