Document Summary

Ferns - dominant sporophyte - organs, dependent gametophyte. Angiosperms - seeds enclosed in a carpel - flowering plants. 3 main traits of seed plants: heterosporous spore production. Micro (male) - produced in microsporangium called gymrocone - thousands. Young microsporangia contain diploid cells, going to go through meiosis. Microsporophytes (2n) --> meiosis --> microspores (n) --> mitosis --> microgametophyte--> pollen grain. Mega (female) - produced in the mega sporangium - only 1 within an ovule. Ovule contains 1 2n megasporophyte --> meiosis --> 4 megaspores (n) per ovule. 3 will degenerate --> the surviving one goes through mitosis --> inside ovule(2n) there"s a megagametophyte (n) Male and female gametophytes derived from male and female spores: ovule. If not fertilized, might still look like a seed but no embryo formed. Within 2n ovule, contain 1000s of 1n cells that contain lipids, starch and proteins. Has archegonium on the bottom (about 2-6) Has pollen tube attached to it to bring sperms.
