Social deviance: sociological theory: set of general propositions meant to explain social phenomena, what are the parts of this idea, sociological theories are never perfect (they can"t all explain deviance 100%) Two types: objective/subjective, can separate most theories into either of these, or somewhere in the middle called hybrid. Rarity: deviant is that which is rare, critique. What # of occurrences: rare but not deviant (police officer heroism, students getting 100%, deviant and common (tax fraud) Objective theories (examples: merton"s anomie, sutherlands differential association, strain, control etc, common sense is appealing (imply the world is easy to understand, many inconsistencies, perhaps deviance isn"t a characteristic/quality? (maybe the act doesn"t matter) Institution of police has been trying to legalize marijuana in ontario, they"re sick of busting people for using it. In europe, they but bars closer to residences.
