Operant conditioning y consequences of past behaviour affect current behaviour. Reinforcement y consequence increase the probability of a behaviour (praise) y positive: presenting something desirable (praising) y negative: removing something undesirable (avoiding parental nagging). Removing something that they don t like, so it s a good thing for them. Extinction y gradual disappearance of a response that is no longer followed by reinforce y initially a burst in responding before things get better. Don t give them what they want when they throw a tantrum or else you are reinforcing the behaviour by giving in. to fix it, ignore the tantrum, initially tantrums get bigger as they try to get what they want. Be patient and continue ignoring it, eventually they ll learn it doesn t work anymore. Punishment y consequences decreases the probability of a behaviour y positive: presenting something undesirable (eg. scolding) y negative: removing something desirable (eg. losing privilege)
