Document Summary
Week 3: observational research & ethics in research. Chapter 12: observational research/studying patterns in the natural world. Involves relatively objective measures of behaviour, often along with a systematic procedure for sampling time intervals or other units of observation. Unstructured - open ended approach (describing without preconceived notions) - inductive. Structured - predefined methods (checking if assumed behaviour occurs) - inductive. Going into the field and observing participants in their natural settings. Observe behaviour as it occurs naturally (no intrusion or intervention) Appropriate when behaviour may be altered if they knew they were being observed. May have to wait a long time for natural behaviour to occur. Purpose: examine spectator behaviour at youth hockey games in ottawa. Methods: recorded all spectators" comments in 1 section in the arena (5 observers; 69 games) Measures: types of comments, target of comments, intensity of comments, who made comments, whether comments varied by player"s age, gender or competitive level.
