Involves relatively objective measures of behaviour, often along with a systematic procedure for sampling time intervals or other units for observation. Continuum: unstructured: open-ended methods, structured: pre-defined methods. Technology when observer absent i. e. pedometers, tv meters. Observe behaviour as it occurs naturally (no intervention) Appropriate when behaviour might be altered if they knew they were being observed. High external validity (being able to generalize from one setting to another setting) Whether comments varied by players" age, gender and competitive level. Researcher engages in same activities as people he/she is observing. Pros: high external validity, experience same environment as participants, collect info on factors not observable. Observe behaviour in settings arranged specifically for observing and recording behaviour. Purpose: effect of women"s suggestive clothing on men"s behaviour.
