Formal work groups: groups that are established by organizations to facilitate the achievement of organizational goals. Informal groups: groups that emerge naturally in response to the common interests of organizational members. Stages of group development: forming - whats the purpose, storming - sorting out roles and responsibilities and solving con ict, norming - resolve issues and develop social consensus, performing - energy devoted to task accomplishment, adjourning. Group structure refers to the the characteristics of the stable social organization of a group - the way it is put together. Larger groups can be less satisfactory (more con ict, friendships etc. ) Additive tasks: tasks in which group performance is dependent on the sum of the performance of individual group members. Disjunctive tasks: tasks in which group performance is dependent on the performance of the best group member.
