Rice is a staple food for 3 million people around the world, is used to describe a food that a large population depends on for a calorie intake. Throughout history there have been periods of time that cultivation has expanded due to the rise of population. 1942 decrease of rice in a region in china and 42 million people died. English term rice is derived from the greek word oryza. Species sativa is latin for cultivated galaberrima is latin for hairless. Asian (sativa) rice and african (galaberrima) rice. African rice is also called red rice. Asian rice originated in lowland areas prone to flooding. 11 percent of the earths arable land is used to grow rice.
