Document Summary

Storage, replicaion and repair of geneic material. Expression of geneic material transcripion: mrna, trna, rrna-splicing occurs. Nuclear envelope: nuclear double membrane, nuclear pores, nuclear lamina (exising just on the inside of the envelope and provides structure for the nucleus) Endosymbioic theory states that the plasma membrane infolded to create the nuclear envelope in eukaryoic cells. This explains the fact that the nuclear envelope is a double layer. Composed of 2 parallel phospholipid bilayers separated by 10-50nm. Outer membrane (onm) binds ribosomes and is coninuous with the rough endoplasmic reiculum. Proteins can easily be translated in the er and can be transported directly into the nucleus. Inner membrane (imn) bears integral proteins and connects to nuclear lamina to keep it in place and maintain structure. Barrier to create a compartment to separate two main cell funcions. Separates nuclear content from cytoplasm (i. e. separates transcripion and translaion. Selecive barrier that allows limited movement of molecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm.
