Document Summary

Things we do to prevent injury/illness: warm-up, stretching, training. Once an injury/illness has occurred: antibiotics/anti-inflammation, rehab to return to original function, braces/taping on return to sport. Things we do when original function cannot be restored: reduce long term impairment. Plyometric: explosive movement, good for sports with lots of jumping. Gross vs fine motor skills: gross - large muscle groups, less precise/specific movements. Open vs closed skills: open - environment constantly changing. Against other players or weather conditions: closed - stable environment. Special forms of protection: goggles, helmets, footwear, braces/tapes/splints, supporters. Protein on own does not increase muscle mass. Protein necessary, but not primary source of fuel. Extra protein consumed burned as energy or stored as fat. Fat is primary fuel for light-to-moderate intensity exercise. More efficient athlete able to maintain same effort level but at lower intensity, therefore more likely to burn fat than carbs. Average 150lb athlete carries up to 80,000 calories in fat.
