Independent variable (iv)= variable that is manipulated by researcher. = variable that may affect a change in dependent variable. Dependent variable (dv)= variable changed by another variable--- depend on independent variable. Predictive variable = 1st variable (one we have info about & are using) Criterion variable = 2nd variable (one being predicted) Demographic variables= physical characteristics of population eg: age, sex, status, family, education. Control variable= any variable that researchers control for (eg: hold constant) subtracting effects of certain independent variables on dependent variable. Measure= tool or instrument that is used to gather data & has 2 parts. Standardized measure= measurement or instrument that has been given to enough people that we can compare one person"s scores to those of other test takers. Measurement tool measure concept such as child abuse, alcoholism, depression Because a concept can have multiple definitions, it must be operationalized for measure.
