Document Summary

Lecture: what is sociology, sociology refers to the study of society it is also study of social phenomena. It is not something that you can touch. As a social construction, society is a product of social relationships. These social relationships are fluid, and as such, are shaped by historical, cultural, social, economic and political variables. These social relationships shape every aspect of our everyday lives. These shared rules are known as social norms. These rules define and prescribe normative or normal behaviour (how we should behave), what we should believe and what we should value in a society. The social norms of a society are specific to a society. In other words, what is considered normative in one society is not necessarily normative in another society: as stated above, the beliefs, values, behaviours and assumptions we make are governed by the social norms of our society.
