Had a lot of identity issues due to not being accepted by his peers. Got along with freud well where most people did not. He was not setting out to create a theory, was working off of. Freud"s theory, but ended up making its own theory. Lots in common with freud"s theory due to working so closely with him. Changed focus to social relationships instead of sexual energy as. Got away of the controversial sexual energy. 8 stages following epigenetic principle: the stages are universal, covers the entire life span but is missing pre natal. How you resolve it will influence your development. Three outcomes of each stage, 1 bad two goo. Bad response: malignant weakness, the worst outcome, bad way of coping. Maladaptive weakness is the good way of coping. Period of birth to 12/18 months ish. Hope must be developed firmly and confirmed and re confirmed throughout life.
