Document Summary

Columella divides the two nares and is continuous inside with the nasal system. The ala is the lateral otside wing of the nose on either side. Upper third of the external nose is made of bone, the rest is cartilage. Much larger than the external size of the nose would indicate. Extends back over the roof of the mouth. Hairs filter the coarsest matter from inhaled air, mucosal blanket filters out dust and bacteria. Nasal mucosa: redder than oral mucosa because of the rich blood supply present to warm the inhaled air. Divided medially by the septum into 2 slitlike air passages. Anterior part holds a rich vascular network: kiessalbach"s plexus- most common site for nose bleeds. Nasal septum isn"t absolutely straight and may deviate to one side. Lateral walls of each nasal cavity contain 3 parallel bony projections- superior, inferior and middle turbinates. They increase sa so more blood vessels and mucous membranes can warm, humidify and filter air.
