1st examination = always awkward (usually think about what to gather next instead of just gathering) Health history: biographical data, reason for seeking care, present health/history of present illness, past hist, fam hist, review of systems, functional assessment/adl. Screening for suicidal thoughts: do they have plan, behaviors, language. Waist and hip measurements (not for 18yrs>/pregnant/lactating) Pt. rating of pain level on 1-10 scale location of pain. Palpate temporal artery them temporomandibular joint as pt. opens/closes mouth. Test extraocular muscles: corneal light reflex, six cardinal positions of gaze (cn iii,iv,vi) Darken room (using ophthalmoscope, inspect ocular fundus: red reflex, disc, vessels, retinal background) Inspect external ear: position/alignment, skin condition, auditory meatus. With otoscope, inspect canal them tympanic membrane from colour, position, landmarks, integrity. With speculum, inspect nares: nasal mucosa, septum, turbinates. Inspect buccal mucosa, teeth, gums, tongue, floor of mouth, palate and uvula. Test cnix and x glossopharyngeal and vagus (gag reflex)
