Communication: the process of transferring meanings from sender to receiver. Context: information that surrounds a communication and helps convey the message. In high-context cultures, messages are implicit and indirect. In low-context cultures, people often meet only to accomplish objectives. 3 degrees of communication quantity elaborate, exacting, succinct. Elaborate: great deal of talking, description includes much detail, people often repeat themselves. Exacting: focuses on precision and the use of the right amount o words to convey the message. Succinct: people tend to say a few words, and allow understatements, pauses and silence to convey meaning. Contextual style is one that focuses on the speaker and relationship of the parties: often used with high power distance. Personal style focuses on the speaker and the reduction of barriers between the parties. Affective style is characterized by language that requires the listener to carefully note what is being said and to observe how the sender is presenting the message.
