Started playing race recrds on late-night show at wjw after noticing how many white. 1950: wjw-am radio (cleveland) teens were buying race records at the store. 1952 (1yr after^): put on 1st ever rock and roll concert with mintz and promoter lew. Died jan. 20, 1965 of damaged liver, at 43. First disk jockey and concert producer of rock and roll. Coined term rock and roll to avoid stigma attached to r&b and so-called race music. 1933: formed a band in high school called sultans of swing (trombone player), but career cut short due to ear infection.
