Child trauma as a risk factor in adulthood. People who have experienced traumatic events in their childhood are at risk for problems impacting functioning; emotional, social, cognitive, physiological issues. Social problems manifest as teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, school failure, and anti- social behavior; can lead to ptsd, dissociative disorders, and conduct disorders. Medical problems such as heart disease, asthma and increased risk for smoking. Trauma informed care and practice is an approach to engaging individuals with trauma histories that recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in their lives. Trauma informed practice is more of an essence of approach than a specific strategy. Services are designed to create an environment of nonviolence, learning and collaboration, and provided in a way that recognizes the need for physical and emotional safety, as well as choice and control in decisions about treatment.
