Document Summary
We have come a long way in terms of attitudes and treatment approaches for those with mental health issues. In terms of treatment, the focus is on reducing distress and improving function. About 10% of canadian"s seek psychological services each year. Therapy is more common for females than males. Needing help may be more acceptable for females than males in terms of dominant gender roles. More common for those aged 35-55 as compared to younger adults and the elderly. Not aware that the symptoms they have is a disorder. Minimize symptoms due to social stigma (depression vs. medical condition and bell lets talk campaign) Mistrust of mental health professionals (fear of being labelled, skeptical of treatment efficacy) Expense, time constraints, availability (psychological services are not covered by ohip) Type of treatment depends on many factors (type and severity of mental disorder, whether harm is a concern, etc. ) Ex: inpatient, outpatient, hospital, private office, community center, medication, therapy, combination.
