22 views2 pages

Document Summary

Most common cause of death in the world. Cad: coronary arteries cannot deliver enough blood to the heart. Atherosclerosis: lumen of artery becomes narrower to the point where blood cannot flow through ischemia (decreased blood supply) Without blood and oxygen, heart muscles cannot function and die, and heart muscles cannot be regenerated. Same risk factors, except diseases like atherosclerosis, diabetes and hypertension worsen them. Warning symptoms: angina pectoris chest pains and myocardial infarction death of part of the heart muscle (heart attack), arrhythmia. Angina pectoris: sudden onset of chest pain due to myocardial ischemia (lasts a few minutes) Happens during exertion when heart requires extra oxygen. Gastro-coronary reflex: after having a heavy meal, blood rushed to digestive system and decreases flow to heart. Antianginal drugs: organic nitrates, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers. Nitrates not actually active, the active metabolite is nitric oxide (no) Cause decrease of myocardial work, output decreased, and oxygen need decreases.
