Document Summary

Gphy102 lecture 9: how the earth changed history. Spin of artic gives hurricanes their distinctive shape: wind drawn inwards into a vicious cycle, atmospheric circulation carries hurricanes, on a large-scale effect are relatively minor and short lived. Southern oscillation is so powerful it has had profound effects on the planet. Objectives: examine the hydrologic cycle, evaluate the measurement of humidity, understand the nature and role of adiabatic processes, describe cloud types and the development of precipitation. The hydrosphere: components of the hydrosphere include water in all of it"s forms, closed system as global scale ( a system, not a lot of moisture relative to the ocean at any given time. Its water is constant being cycled through the reservoir. Specific humidity: actual quantity of water vapour in the air (grams of water vapour per kilogram of air, determines water available for precipitation, warm air can hold much more water than cold, not a linear relationship!
