Document Summary

Single antigen binding site (unlike b cells that have two arms for being a tetramer) T cells can only bind to fragments of antigens that are displayed on the surface of host cells- the protein that displaces the antigen fragment on the cell surface is called mhc (major histocompatibility complex) molecule. Host cell takes up antigen in which enzymes cleave and make fragments-which then binds to mhc molecule inside the cell- which then binds to cell surface for antigen recognition. T cell with the right specify sees antigen fragment, the antigen receptor on t cell will then bind to antigen fragment and mhc molecule= adaptive immune response. *mhc can display many antigen fragments, but t cell is specific to that one antigen. Long term protection that a prior infection or vaccination provides because it alters the speed, strength, and duration of the immune response.
