Perception of language is constructed: use prior knowledge to fill in missing information. The state governors met with their respective legi*latures covening in the capital city. People can still understand the word legislatures . Spliced words out from conversations and present them to participants. Present individual words to participants as well (no context) When there is no context to guide participants, they were only able to identify half of the words. When the words are restored in the original context, participants were able to pick up more of the words. Lots of things are different across languages, but what is really amazing is how much is the same. Basic idea: syntactic rules build a structure and you can put individual words into the structure to create meaning. Sentence made up of noun phrase and verb phrase. Noun phrase is made up of determinant, adjective, and noun (the ferocious dragon)
