Specific criticisms of dsm-5: sachdev, 2013: continues weaknesses of earlier editions, not working toward scientific classification. We"re not really moving towards a true scientific classification, particularly one that is based on causality: psychiatric knowledge not advanced enough to dsm-iv, categories dimensional states or conditions. We have a pigeonhole categorization, but in reality it is a continuum. We do see a bit of continuum with asd and schizophrenia: creates new mental disorders to benefit psychiatry and drug industry. Has to do with providing insurance coverage for individuals who show these symptoms. If you can get something in the dsm, you can get it paid for with your health insurance. It is also the pharmaceutical industry and psychiatrists who do this. There is pressure from a lot of non-mental health professionals to get categories in the dsm, more so for making money: lowers threshold for several diagnoses, medicalizing normal reactions. Does not mean symptoms are mental" as distinct from physical.
