Dsm5 separated depressive disorders and bipolar disorders because different etiological mechanisms (causes) Severe, recurrent temper outburst manifested verbally and or behaviorally that are out of proportion in intensity or duration to the situation or provocation. Outbursts inconsistent with developmental level (child at age not behaving their age) Outburst occur on average 3-5 times a week. Mood between outbursts are irritable or angry almost everyday. Above criteria have been met for 12 months and not more than 3 consecutive months in which all criteria have no been met. Onset of symptoms was before age of 10 but not before 6 or after 18. Behaviors don"t occur exclusively during depressive episode and not accounted for by another disorder. Not coexist with odd, bpd or intermittent explosive disorder. Symptoms not due to affects of substance or medication. Placed in dsm 5 because growing problem in diagnosis. Rapid increase in diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children (before you couldn"t show bipol till late teens)
