Narrow down range of treatments to a set that we believe to be effective in the case of these symptoms/ that disorder. Not based on our understanding of their causes. Assume similar symptoms = similar disorder with same causes (not true) Treats disorders as discrete entities, not as points on continuum. Tendency for certain disorders to become popular, and then fall out of favour. Multiple personality disorder (did) in 1980s and 90s (increase in diagnosis) Adhd and autism in the 2000s (frequency of diagnosis has skyrocketed) Bipolar disorder (especially in children) suggests pharmacological treatment. We do not know the causes of any, just label the symptom.
