Symptoms impair social, occupational, or other domains of functioning. Abnormality based on agreement of psychologists and psychiatrists. Pressures to include symptoms as disorders in dsm. Insurance coverage/health coverage for mental disorders in the dsm. Oppositional deviance disorder - kids who don"t listen to their parents. Terrorists are psychologically healthy despite their political views. E. g. people w/ schizophrenia may not have distress about their condition. E. g. extremely shy people, people who are stingy/generous --> no diagnosis for them. The most dominant model; esp w/ psychiatrists, 1700-1900. Abnormality caused by physical problems in the brain. Began w/ relationship btwn syphilis and mental symptoms. Common terminology regarding mental disorders come from this model: Breakdown in the physical functioning in the brain/nerves. Individuals w/ the same disorders/symptoms don"t always respond to the same drugs. Conflict btwn beliefs and desires that lead to mental disorders. Same processes in that occur in normalcy also occur in abnormality; something went wrong.
