We do not know the causes of any disorders we will discuss, or any others in the dsm. We do not know why or how our pharmacological or psycho-therapeutic treatments work. Ethical considerations prevent much research involving individuals with a particular disorder. Psychological symptoms of mental disorders cannot be easily duplicated or verified in non- human animals. Causes of mental disorder vary both between disorders, and from case to case within disorders. Unacceptable violations of social or cultural expectations. Symptoms impair social, occupational, or other domains of functioning. Symptoms cause significant concern for the individual.
