Debunking learning theory: harlow, watched monkey children and mothers and didn"t think that attachment was really just about food, he thought that attachment might be about contact comfort, he provided babies with a set of surrogate mothers. Both were fake, stuffed replicas of mom. One was stiff and wired, but provided food. One was soft and plush but didn"t have any food. The baby attached to the soft, plush. The baby goes to the wire mother for the food, but then cuddles with the soft surrogate. He goes back for food, but spends 17-18 hours a day with the soft mother and only about 1 hour with the wire mother. Harlow defined love it in such a way that a baby could be assumed to love the mother if it found great comfort from it. Harlow created a frightening mechanical machine intended to frighten the monkey and he runs directly to the cloth mother.
