PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Mental Model, The Stranger Returns, Affectional Bond
Document Summary
The propensity to make strong emotional bonds to particular individuals is a basic component of human nature, already present in germinal form in the neonate bowlby and ainsworth. Freud was the first theorist to theorize about attachment. Rather it is about comfort contact (similar to synchrony- interaction with parent) Harlow conducted experiments where the monkey got 2 surrogate moms. One mom was soft with no food. And the other mom was hard-wired with food. If attachment is about food then the monkey will get attached to the wired mother. If attachment is about comfort contact then the monkey will get attached to the plush mom. Monkeys spent all their time with the plush mother even though she was unable to provide food. Plush mom is the closest the monkey can get to a comforting mother. Harlow stressed out the monkeys to see how the monkeys respond.
