These two brain structures regulate the function of numerous endocrine glands. When stimulated, the hypothalamus secretes releasing hormones that send a signal to the anterior pituitary hormone release. Thyrotropin releasing hormone (trh) is produced by the hypothalamus. Anterior pituitary produces thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh) Thyroid gland releases thyroxine (t4) and triiodothyronine (t3) The hypothalamus produces releasing hormone (i. e. crf) Releasing hormones stimulate the anterior pituitary to secrete hormones (i. e. acth) Hormones from the anterior pituitary signal target tissues to produce a biological effect or secrete another hormone (i. e. cortisol) The posterior pituitary is stimulated via neuronal signals sent from the hypothalamus. Many different hormones are produced by the pituitary, but only a few are used clinically. An anterior pituitary hormone that stimulates growth and metabolism. Released by the posterior pituitary gland when the hypothalamus detects a decrease in plasma volume. Adh acts on the kidneys to increase water resorption.
