HTHSCI 1LL3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Antibody, Protein Structure, Carboxylic Acid
Document Summary
Protein structure: the conformation (or shape) of a protein predicts its function (encoded for by dna) Protein structure is held in their shape by non-covalent bonds. The primary structure (linear sequence of amino acids within the protein, dictated by dna) The tertiary structure (overall three- dimensional (3-d) conformation) The quaternary structure (only in a protein with multiple subunits) The primary structure of a protein determines the way a protein folds into a unique three- dimensional structure called its native conformation. Rules: must flexible enough to function properly but stable enough to not form another conformation. A regular repeating structure where the coil is maintained by h-bonds (hydrogen bonds are weaker, but they are just additives of additional stability to the structure) Regardless of the side chain because o-h bond is always four amino acid"s away because of the fact that this pattern occurs in the back bone. Force between the amine & carboxyl group causes coil shape.
