Intro: 1. 7 visits per year to emergency room in ontario because of addiction, 4 pillar approach, prevention, harm reduction, treatment, enforcement, 4 broad avenues which we try to respond to addiction. Questions: different responses are beneficial to different people and not all treatments will work for all people. Some of them work some of the time, and not for all people. Illegal: selective prevention: some groups that might require special efforts. Less knowledge of effects of addiction: young individuals more prone to experimentation, targeted by ads, targeting those at risk. How: reduce criminal behavior, less exposure to diseases (helps healthcare system) Limited responses confined to specific areas, impact not always holistic. International pressures, war on drugs: difficult to work around and come with string attached. Pharmacotherapy: use of drugs to treat addiction, drug substitution - just shifting from one to another, using methadone to treat heroin addiction, replacing the addiction, reducing harm to people, relapse prevention: antabuse, naltrexone for opioids.
