More than other drugs, caffeine spans all classes and professions, used with same goals. Rely on caffeine to stimulant themselves/become more energized. Yet, method of delivery may be class-based. Culture around caffeine consumption that is linked to class (ex. buying at starbucks vs. Division between the coffee shop and the coffeehouse types of activities we associate with each place (ex. coffeehouse posters about events) Modern coffee culture, rather than subversion, a declaration of lifestyle: Rather than being space of revolutionary social/political discussion become places where we declare lifestyle/markers of identity. True knowledge of coffee highly valued, works against egalitarian nature of earlier consumption by creating strati cation. Correct way to drink/brew coffee is a badge of honour. Caffeine closely linked to emergence of capitalism. Long work days caffeine as alarm clock . Useful to prevent accidents in industrial workplaces. Tea provisions built into british pay = depressed wages. Not just about energizer to construct work environments that are happier, friendlier.
