More than other drugs, caffeine spans all classes and professions, used with same goals. Yet, method of delivery may be class-based. How: culture around starbucks compared to tim hortons, division between the coffee shop and the coffeehouse. Modern coffee culture, rather than subversion, a declaration of lifestyle: tim hortons vs. hipster coffee roasteries, true knowledge of coffee highly valued, works against egalitarian nature of earlier consumption by creating stratification. Caffeine closely linked to emergence of capitalism: caffeine as alarm clock , useful to prevent accidents in industrial workplaces. Tea provisions built into british pay, depressed wages. Other modern uses: extends workday to 24 hours, to construct work environments that are happier, friendlier, workplace is impacted by inclusion of coffee machines/coffee breaks. Workers independently organize and come up with a system and decides who gets coffee on each day: an antidote to other commodities- like alcohol, a way to lure customers in. A global addiction: after oil, coffee most valuable commodity.
